Day 10(4) : Coireshub to Lochan Nam Breac

Yesterday Start Tomorrow

Monday 14th May

1790m ascent

2 Corbetts

Coire Sgoireadail

A still frosty morning, ice on tent and water, too cold for midges, very pleasant, unfortunately the sun was behind the hills so had to pack wet again. An excellent path took me up Sgurr nan Eugallt to sit on the top in the sunshine gazing at the Inner Hebrides, Barrisdale, Loch Quoich .........

Loch Quoich

It seemed a pity to go down, but Gleann Cosaidh looked interesting particularly when an eagle sailed over Loch an Lagain Aintheich ignoring two ravens that were trying to chase it off. The warm side of the hill was covered in frogs of all sizes and it was quite difficult to avoid standing on them, it always amazes me how many frogs there are high in the hills. Barrisdale Bay

Loch an Lagain Aintheich

I worked my way up Gleann Cosaidh over increasingly rough and rocky ground before heading directly to Druim Chosaidh picking my way steeply through the rocks. The ridge to Sgurr a Choire-bheith is very rough with some scrambling and I was surprised at one point to meet three sheep, there were no sheep anywhere else and I wondered how long these three had been there, they looked happy though, if that's possible for sheep. On the ridge to Sgurr a Choire-bheith

I was hoping the ridge would not get any more difficult before the summit but once there I was able to admire the views in comfort. I was tempted to keep heading west into Knoydart but, while feeling healthy today, I realised I was not superman! So headed down towards Mam Unndalain to find the path to Loch nam Breac.

Loch Hourn from Sgurr a Choire-bheith

It would have helped to have some of superman's powers as there was a very steep and rocky descent with some tricky route finding and I was happy to reach the path. A pleasant walk with a few rain showers brought me to the head of the loch where I found a good pitch by the shore. Approaching Lochan Nam Breac

I had just pitched the tent when a very heavy shower came over and I spent the next half hour inside listening to the wind and rain.

Cloud shadows

That was the last shower that evening and the sun then appeared, shining on the new snow sprinkled over the tops. It was a delightful evening with just enough wind to keep the beasties away but a bit chilly.
