Pass of Ballater in the Rain

A damp start to a wet day but I managed to get some Nikwax from a fishing/shooting shop in Ballater and returned to the campsite to waterproof the trousers. I got fed up waiting for them to dry (the knees were getting cold) so set off, between showers, with trousers drying on the legs.

Looking back over The Dee Valley, Mount Keen in the distance

I left the Pass of Ballater just ahead of a large group of youngsters also heading for Morven and surprisingly arrived on the summit well ahead of them (I must have been getting used to walking). It was typical summit weather, strong cold wind, rain and sleet but at least the legs stayed dry.

Morven

A trackless route through the heather to Mullachdubh, where a lot of peat has been cut in the past, and was now the home of large numbers of mountain hares, to a track which led to a deer fence with a locked gate. Why does a gate here in the middle of nowhere need to be locked, especially on land labelled as ‘Forestry Commission Access Land’? Morven Summit Locked gate in the deer fence. Access land?

The track down through the trees had not been used for a while and in places was blocked by fallen trees which I had to climb over, and under!

Obstacle course through the trees

Of course I went past the path I wanted and had to retrace some of the obstacle course to find it. It was a relief to emerge, somewhat scratched and battered to Glencarvie.

Glencarvie

A stroll down the road to the River Don, crossed by a simple footbridge below Candacraig House (I didn’t see Billy Conolly), then a short distance on the 'main' road ,very little traffic. Bridge over the Don
A nicely made and painted sign caught my eye before I turned up the track to Glen Ernan. After passing all the inhabited buildings I nearly stood on some Curlew chicks as I was looking for a suitable place to pitch. Faichla sign

In the notebook tonight: ‘seem to have caught a cold in Montrose AGAIN’ (same problem last year!)

Windy but not raining (yet)
